Quote of the Day

"Don't sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them." — Madam C.J. Walker

Embracing Kindness on National Love People Day 💜

National Love People Day, celebrated on September 30th, encourages us to spread kindness and compassion, uplifting others through simple acts of love. This day began with the idea that a little kindness can ripple into extraordinary change. Whether it’s a smile to a stranger, a thoughtful text to a family member or friend, or volunteering time, the essence of this day is to remind everyone of the power of genuine connection. When we show love without expecting anything in return, we strengthen our communities and build a world that feels a little more like home. It’s not just about grand gestures—sometimes, the smallest acts of love have the greatest impact.

5 Ways to Celebrate:

  • Leave a heartfelt note for a loved one.

  • Volunteer at a Senior Center: Spend the day visiting a local senior center, like Bowie Senior Center, sharing stories, playing games, and brightening someone’s day.

  • Support a Local Charity Drive: Partner with Bowie Food Pantry or a local shelter to donate food, clothing, or essential items for those in need.

  • Surprise a neighbor or coworkers with baked goods.

  • Neighborhood Chalk Walk: Gather with neighbors to write positive messages and draw colorful art on the sidewalks, spreading joy to those walking by.

Community engagement is essential for fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose, which is exactly what "Community Matters" in Bowie aims to promote. This local event series brings residents together with Police Chief Dwayne A. Preston to discuss issues, share ideas, and participate in shaping the future of our neighborhoods. Here are five reasons why every Bowie resident should consider attending:

1. Stay Informed: Learn about new developments and initiatives impacting our community.

2. Voice Your Concerns: Community Matters offers a platform for residents to speak directly with city officials and express concerns or suggestions for improvement.

3. Network with Neighbors: It’s an excellent opportunity to meet fellow residents, local business owners, and community leaders, building stronger social ties.

4. Influence Local Policies: Your input can shape city policies, contribute to problem-solving, and drive projects that reflect the community’s needs.

5. Support a Stronger Bowie: Attending these events shows your commitment to building a vibrant, inclusive, and safe community.

Whether you’re a long-time resident or new to Bowie, Community Matters provides a space for everyone to connect and contribute. Make your voice heard, stay involved, and be a part of the positive change in our city!

Bowie Speed Cameras are Relocating on October 1, 2024

On October 1, 2024, the Bowie Police Department will relocate several of the City’s speed cameras as part of the Safe Speed Camera Program. Cameras on Pointer Ridge Drive, Millstream Drive, and Stonybrook Drive will be moved to Dahlia Drive, Nashua Lane, and Tulip Grove Drive. During a warning period lasting until November 1, 2024, drivers will receive warnings for speeding violations at these new locations. Afterward, civil citations will be issued. This initiative aims to reduce speeding and accidents, promoting safer conditions for pedestrians and cyclists. The program's goal is to encourage compliance with speed limits on Bowie city streets.
