Be Storm Ready: Protect Your Home and Family from Tropical Storms
As the summer months approach, so does the heightened risk of tropical storms and heavy rain. For many communities, these weather events are a perennial challenge, bringing not only the risk of flooding and wind damage but also the potential for power outages and other disruptions. Preparing adequately can make a significant difference in how well you and your family weather the storm. Here are some essential tips to help you stay safe and resilient.
Understand the Risks
Tropical storms and heavy rain can bring a variety of hazards. Strong winds can cause damage to buildings and infrastructure, while torrential rain can lead to flooding and landslides. It’s important to stay informed about the specific risks in your area. Local weather services and emergency management agencies provide valuable information on expected storm paths, intensity, and potential impacts.
Create an Emergency Plan
Having a well-thought-out emergency plan is crucial. This plan should include:
- Evacuation Routes: Know the safest routes to higher ground or designated shelters.
- Communication Plan: Establish how your family will communicate during a storm. Ensure that all members have emergency contact numbers and a meeting place if you get separated.
- Emergency Kit: Prepare a kit with essential items such as water, non-perishable food, medications, flashlights, batteries, a first aid kit, and important documents.
Secure Your Home
To minimize damage, it’s vital to secure your home against the elements:
- Inspect and Repair: Check your roof, windows, and doors for any vulnerabilities. Repair loose shingles, seal gaps, and reinforce doors.
- Outdoor Furniture: Bring in or secure outdoor furniture and other loose items that could become projectiles in strong winds.
- Storm Shutters: If you live in an area prone to strong storms, invest in storm shutters or board up windows with plywood.
Stay Informed
Stay tuned to local news and weather reports. Modern technology offers numerous ways to receive alerts, including smartphone apps, weather radios, and community notification systems. Sign up for alerts from local emergency management agencies to receive real-time information.
Flood Preparation
Flooding is a common and dangerous consequence of tropical storms. Take these steps to prepare:
- Elevate Valuables: Move important items and documents to higher levels in your home.
- Sandbags: Use sandbags to help divert water away from your property.
- Sump Pumps: Ensure that your sump pump is working properly and consider installing a battery backup.
During the Storm
When the storm hits, safety is paramount:
- Stay Indoors: Avoid going outside unless absolutely necessary. Stay away from windows and doors.
- Emergency Services: Keep emergency numbers handy and know how to contact local authorities if needed.
- Power Outages: Be prepared for potential power outages. Have a supply of batteries and consider a generator for essential appliances.
After the Storm
Once the storm has passed, the danger may not be over. Follow these guidelines for post-storm safety:
- Avoid Floodwaters: Do not walk or drive through floodwaters. They can be contaminated and hide hazards.
- Inspect for Damage: Carefully inspect your property for damage. Be cautious of structural damage and downed power lines.
- Documentation: Document any damage with photos and contact your insurance company as soon as possible.
Community Support
In times of crisis, communities often come together. Check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those with disabilities. Sharing resources and information can help everyone recover more quickly.
Preparing for tropical storms and heavy rain requires a combination of planning, securing your home, and staying informed. By taking these steps, you can protect yourself, your family, and your property. Remember, the key to weathering any storm is preparation and community resilience. Stay safe!

The Bowie Baysox cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Harrisburg Senators on Wednesday night, powered by a six-run first inning. The early offensive surge began with Dylan Beavers' RBI grounder and was highlighted by Ryan Higgins' first career grand slam. Samuel Basallo had a standout night, going 4-for-5 and boosting his season hit total to 97. Bowie’s starter, Alex Pham, threw five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits. The Baysox bullpen sealed the win with strong performances from Levi Stoudt and Bradley Brehmer. The series continues Thursday, with more exciting promotions planned for the week.
