This is the final week to see 2nd Star Productions’ “Dreamgirls” at Bowie Playhouse in White Marsh Park. The volunteer-run community theater is delivering an engaging performance of the 1981 Broadway hit. Founded in 1996, 2nd Star Productions typically stages three shows annually, except in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Producer Cheramie Jackson, with the company since 2007, aimed to enhance diversity in Prince George’s County theater. Jackson wanted to reflect the county's rich African American culture. At a recent show, the audience whispered along to familiar tunes. Ryan Holmes, as Jimmy Early, delivered an electrifying performance that delighted the crowd.

Holmes shared his love for the role, stating, “I get to be somebody other than myself.” Kayla Adams, who plays Effie White, highlighted the challenge of singing for three hours. Director Rikki Howie Lacewell chose to draw inspiration from the original show rather than the 2006 film. The production's success is marked by sold-out performances and enthusiastic applause, making it a significant achievement for the theater company. “Dreamgirls” runs through June 29 and 2nd Star’s next production is “Sister Act.”
